Little did we know, we depend on forests for our survival, from the air we breathe to the wood we use. Besides providing habitats for animals and livelihoods for humans, forests also offer watershed protection, prevent soil erosion and mitigate climate change. Yet, despite our dependence on forests, we are still allowing them to disappear.

In Permaculture, we plant food forest (a productive forest). We use the technique called bio-mimicry where we learn from the real forest and mimic it. The best part is that we can choose specifically what plant do we want to have in our forest. From the ground cover, shrubs, climbers, lower canopy, top canopy, and even the palms. Without realising, while having a productive food forest to provide us food, we have provide habitat for the animals, as well as a place to absorb carbon and release oxygen to the neighbourhood.

If we really take a few moments to wonder, how much of the forest product do we use in our daily lives? Have you had your breakfast? Read a newspaper? Switched on a light? Travelled to work in a bus or car? Signed a cheque? Made a shopping list? Got a parking ticket? Blown your nose into a tissue? When the last tree is cut, when its too late, will that be the only time we’re going to realise that money cannot buy oxygen, and that even paper money is made of tree?

Without realising, this is a massive genocide for the whole world.

When the last tree is cut,
Then we are going to realize that money cannot produce oxygen.

Around 3.5 billion to 7 billion trees are cut down each year. Major categories contributing to forest loss according to include:

Timber harvesting (37%), Agricultural expansion (28%), Wildfire (21%), Construction of roads for resource mining and extraction, pipelines, and power lines (12%) and;
Expansion of transportation networks via roads (2%).

This will cause loss of biodiversity. The animals are losing their habitats.
This will also cause increased in climate change. The area will be deserted and people will suffer from endless drought. Probably then, we have to do rain dance occasion every month (weird as it may sound but it worked out well).

Let’s stop deforestation, together. Save our planet. Recycle papers. Do not waste even a tiny bit of it. •
